How High Above Dining Table Should Chandelier Hang? How High Above Dining Table Should Chandelier Hang?

Here at the Contemporary Chandelier Company, we specialise in providing unique modern LED designer chandeliers, whether large drop staircase chandeliers or sculptural light features for a foyer or room centrepiece using crystal and LED lights. Today we are going to focus on dining table chandeliers, looking in detail at how high the chandelier should hang above it.

Why Does Height Matter?

The height of your chandelier completely changes the way it feels in the room. A statement piece, hung too high and it disappears and gets swallowed by the ceiling, but hung too low and it could become a distraction or a nuisance that gets in the way. The ideal height will offer a feeling of intimacy and elegance.

General Chandelier Height Recommendations

As a rule, it is recommended that to find the right position and height for your chandelier, you should measure between 30-36 inches above the top of the dining table. This is the ideal point for the bottom of the fixture. This recommendation is based on an 8-foot ceiling as this is the average ceiling height. However, you may need to make some adjustments if your ceiling height differs, as well as depending on the table size and position in the room.

Adjustments for Ceiling Height

For each additional foot of height beyond 8-foot, it is recommended to raise the chandelier three inches higher. For example, if your ceiling is 12-foot high, you would raise the fixture an additional 12 inches from the standard height. This would bring it 42-48 inches above the table, measuring from the base.

Adjustments for Table Size

As the height of a chandelier also depends on its overall size, you will also need to make adjustments based on your table size when hanging it over your dining table. The diameter of the fixture should be one-half to two-thirds the width of the dining table. For example, if the table is 42 inches wide, the chandelier should be no more than 30 inches across. This ensures that the light fitting is in proportion with the table and that it works well physically both when people are seated and standing.

Adjustments for Table Position

For whatever reason, if your table cannot be in the centre of the room, the chandelier should be placed above it, as opposed to the centre of the room. The point of a dining table chandelier is to light this specific area whilst embellishing it like jewellery. If there are other areas of the room that the light emitted doesn’t reach in this position, then you can add lamps in those areas. The best way to understand this is how it looks and feels when the lights are on.
