The Azura

We were invited to design, build and install the central artwork for the main atrium of the P+O Cruises' new multi-million pound superliner.

We installed this chandelier at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, North Italy in late 2009.

This detailed design sheet and 3D rendering show some of the stages employed during the development of this striking piece.

Primarily a sculpture, this project involved three main areas; the Globe, the acrylic 'swooshes' and the rotation mechanism.

Every element was created from scratch - the world spun from 3mm stainless steel, the continents hand-cut from brass sheet in the US, hand-formed and beaten over the steel in Wales, the rotation mechanism built to our design in Stourbridge, CAD files developed in Shropshire and Stourbridge, acrylic modelled in opaque acrylic In Northampton, laser-cut and bonded in London. All assembled at our workshop in Shropshire.

The acrylic structure is allowed to spin slowly around the central globe; this is powered by water jets spraying onto a turbine. The pool lights then projected the moving planes and vapour trails onto the domed ceiling. See sculpture in motion in video section.
